Applying for government scholarships in India

Every year, eligible students miss government scholarships not because they lack marks, but because of a mismatched name, an unlinked bank account or a missed institute verification. This guide is about getting the process right.

Where to apply

  • National Scholarship Portal (NSP) at scholarships.gov.in — central schemes and several state schemes, including pre-matric, post-matric, merit-cum-means and central sector schemes, plus AICTE’s Pragati and Saksham.
  • State portals — many states run their own systems (for example Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra’s MahaDBT, Karnataka’s SSP). Check your state’s official portal; some schemes are available only there.
  • Private and CSR scholarships — foundations and companies run their own applications. Browse them in our India filter.

The process, step by step

  1. Register once. NSP uses a one-time registration linked to your identity details. Make sure your name matches exactly across your ID, marksheets and bank account.
  2. Choose the right scheme. The portal shows schemes you appear eligible for. Read each scheme’s guidelines; you can usually receive only one government scholarship at a time.
  3. Fill academic and family details. Enter marks, course, institute and annual family income exactly as on your certificates.
  4. Upload documents in the format and size required.
  5. Submit before the student deadline and download the acknowledgement.
  6. Institute verification. Your college’s nodal officer must verify your application by a separate deadline. Follow up in person — this is where many applications stall.
  7. District / state verification for some schemes, followed by payment through direct benefit transfer.

Documents to prepare early

  • Previous year’s marksheets
  • Family income certificate from the competent authority
  • Caste / category certificate (if applicable)
  • Domicile certificate (for state schemes)
  • Bonafide or enrolment certificate and fee receipt
  • Bank account in the student’s name, active and linked for direct benefit transfer
  • Disability certificate (if applicable)

Track them with our readiness check.

Most common rejection reasons

  • Name or date-of-birth mismatch between documents
  • Bank account inactive or not linked for direct transfers
  • Income certificate expired or from the wrong authority
  • Applied to two schemes that cannot be combined
  • Institute did not verify before the deadline
  • Blurry or wrong-size uploads

Track and renew

Most schemes require renewal every year with fresh marks and fee details. Set a reminder for the next window the day your payment arrives.
